  1. My independent book is "The Giver." So far I really like the book. I wonder what job Jonas will get assigned too at the ceremony of the twelve’s. The setting is very important to this book. Jonas lives in a place that is called the community. They are very sheltered and people get "released." To get released is a very big punishment. The people of this community do not use feeling. They discuss them at the dinner table and talk about how they are not supposed to have them. This book is very unrealistic. It is very futuristic, and unnatural. I don’t think this would ever happen in the real world. This society it isolated and secluded. They have their food dropped in by plane, and their spouses and children are assigned to them. I feel very excited when Jonas's father brings home Gabriel. I think that Jonas is something special because of his encounter with the apple. He thinks somehow the apple changed that was out of the ordinary. In this community the old and young are treated the same. They have special rules, and they are both more likely to get released. I think that Jonas is going to get assigned helper of the old at the ceremony of the twelve’s. I really like how the author writes without showing emotion. I think Jonas wants to show emotion even though he can’t.

  2. Jonas reminds me of myself because I am very curious. Jonas wants to know beyond what the community lets him. Jonas and Fiona bathe an old woman. Jonas has feelings for Fiona, but these feelings or "Stirrings" are bad. Jonas had to take a pill to make them go away. I think this is ridiculous, because Jonas can't make his own decisions. The pill makes all dreams go away. This erases freedom of speech and free will. Jonas' family has to sign a contract that states they will not get emotionally attached to Gabriel. I got very nervous when Jonas was skipped in the job assignments in the ceremony of the twelves. Jonas got the job as the receiver of memory. I think Jonas gets this job because of what he saw in the apple. I think Jonas is going to become The Giver, this could be the significance of the books title.

  3. My independent book is Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons. The book started out a little slow and I was confused on what was happening. I got more into the book and I really like it. The main character in my book is a girl named Lilly. The book is separated into four different parts. Lilly reflects on the past and gets older as the story unfolds. The setting of the sotry is very important. A lot of the book takes place in Edgewater. Lilly goes to a beach with her family every year. It has a lot of meaning to her.

  4. A lot has been happening in my story. There's quite a few kids that live in beachhouses near Lilly and she is friends with all of them. Jeebs, her older brother, isn't around a lot because he's in a summer program. Lilly makes a new friend at Edgewater beach. His name is Jon. They start to spend a lot of time together. Another new character comes into the book. Her name is Peaches and none of the kids like her. Both of her parents died in an accident, so all the adults at Edgewater feel bad for her. Now, everyone is paying attention to Peaches and not Lilly. This is when Lilly and Jon hang out even more, which upsets Peaches because she has a crush on Jon. Lilly and Jon spend an entire day together at the beach. That night when Lilly is lying in bed with her best friend, Wilma, her dog, she says something interesting. She's 12 years old and she says she doesn't just like Jon, she loves him. The thing that caught me off guard was this: Lilly says to never doubt the love coming from a child. It may not be as physical as coming from an adult, but don't doubt that a child can't fall in love with someone. I like this idea. People throw around the word love so often that they don't really mean it. This upsets me because if you say you love someone, you should mean it with all you got. When Lilly says this, you can tell she means it with all her heart.

  5. My novel is the fourth book in the series "Blue Bloods", The Van Alen Legacy. The first three books where very snazzy. So far though, I am really confused. It seemed like I might have missed a book in between there. But it is the fourth so... Anyway not much has happened so far, and I feel like the start of this book is very slow and not as interesting as it should be. Then again most of the series books started off like that but got very good towards the end. So hopefully I have something to look forward to. Still confused at why the main girl, Schuyler, is on the run. But again, right when you start reading it’s a year past from where the last book left off.

  6. My independent book project is called Burned by Ellen Hopkins. It's about a Morman girl named Pattyn who has a very strict family but unlike the rest of her family she doesn't believe that women are just for bearing children. Her father is abusive and a drunk who beats Pattyn's mother. Pattyn starts seeing this boy and does things with him her parents defeiantly would not approve of. She sneaks out of her house and tells her parents that she's going to church when she's really seeing him. They don't truly care about eachother, they are just doing the dirties. When Pattyn's father finds out, he holds a gun up to him and threatens to kill him if he comes near Pattyn again. So he doesn't see her ever again and he starts seeing his old girlfriend and when Pattyn sees them talking she goes up to her and punches her in the face and gets suspended. She gets sent off to live with her aunt J who is unreligous and lives in an old ranch by herself. I think living Aunt J will change her and make her realize she doesn't have to be Morman or have to be like how her family wants her to be. That's how far I am now but so far it's pretty boring after she gets shipped off.

  7. My book "Rough & Tumble" follows Dominic Fucillo as he goes though life in the NFL. He plays for the New York Giants. So far in the book it talks about a game when his team plays the Philadelphia Eagles. I really like the book right now because it is very realistic, as far as the in-game talk and actions. I could relate to a lot of his feelings because I love to play football just like he does.

  8. My independant book is called "A Room On Lorelel Street" so far this book is really good (: i like it a lot Zoe is a 17 year old girl, trying to deal with her alcoholic mother. In the beggining of the book, she finds her mothers food that she made her still sitting on the table from this morning. Zoe runs up and starts packing her bag. I dont think Zoe should leave, becuase where is she going to go? Her mom finds her downstairs washing dishes, she is very hungover from the night before, but Zoe still sees her as beautiful. I wonder why she still thinks her mom looks good, with skinny legs, puffy eyes, scraggly hair, i hope she doesnt look up to her mom, becuase i feel like her mother is a terrible influence. Zoe had her first day of school, and her mom didnt have a clue. she didnt know what clases she was taking or what sports she was in, like tennis. I feel bad for zoe, but i feel like shes been dealing with this for a long time. I think that Zoe wants to show her emotion, but she needs to be strong for her and her mother, because her mom isnt stable, and so she needs to be. I feel like Zoe had to grow up faster than most 17 year olds.

  9. Danielle- where is Zoe's father? and why does she pack up all her stuff if she doesn't run away.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jennnaaayyy- she doesnt have a father, her father was a scud. lol and she wants to run away, but she knows that she shouldnt, becuase she needs to be there for her mother, because her mother is a crazy drunk.

    ReplyDelete
  11. well if i was her i wouldn't be there for my mother if my mother was a crazy drunk. when she's 18 she should probably just leave. does her mom like.. care about her and cook for her and stuff? or no

    ReplyDelete
  12. no, she cooks for her mom all the time, she made her eggs in the morning before she left for school, and her mom didnt eat them, becuase she was to hungover. derrrrrrrr. ps, she wears some ugly shoes.. :s

  13. The book I am reading is A Bend in the Road by Nicholas Sparks. I like the book so far, but there isn’t too much going on. In the beginning it kind of says what’s going to happen. It’s about a husband whose wife was killed, and I guess he gets with his son’s teacher. I want to know how she was killed, but the author never brings it up. If he does, he gives little or no details. I think he does this on purpose to make you keep reading. It’s working for me, because that’s all I’m thinking about. I think it is interesting how it’s written in a viewpoint of some guy you don’t know, who is writing a story about them. I want to know who that is, too! I also think it is interesting some of the things he says, or how it’s so different than what I would think. I think it might be because adults think differently than teenagers. I always thought it would be weird reading a romance novel with a guy rather than a female main character, but it isn’t that bad.

  14. The book i am reading is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night - TIme. I like the book so far because it keeps you interested. This book is about a 15 year old boy Christopher Boone. He is very smart with math and is interested in mystery novels. In the begging he finds a dead dog with a fork in it and he wants to find out who killed it. The boy in this book acts a lot different then what a 15 year old boy would i think. He acts more childish and cant handle being yelled at. A cop came to the place where the dog was killed and asks him questions. He freaks out and curls up in a ball. It gives no story of his past so i don't know if he was every abused or anything to make him act this way. I think maybe later on in the story it will be revealed or maybe it is just the way he is.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can relate to Christopher Boone, the main character in my book in a few ways. He is very creative in his way of thinking. I like to draw so I always have to think creatively to come up with different things. He seems like he has anger problems when he gets overwhelmed. I can relate to that because when i have too much to do or too much on my mind at once i get very frustrated.

  16. Alyssa- That would annoy the heck outta me. I know where your coming from with the "reading a romance book from a guys point of veiw". I don't think I would be able to read it myself. Haha it's just harder to relate to the person if its from a guys perspective.

  17. The book I am reading is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Olvier Relin. I really like the book so far. It is really interesting how they tell the story. Greg Mortenson (who the book is based on) is a really extraordinary guy. He does incredible for the children of Kophe, located on a mountain called K2. Everyone who were with him, are amazed at what he does to help so many people. This book is a little hard to understand but that is not going to stop me from reading it.

  18. The book I am reading is "Three Cups of Tea." The setting of the book is very important to the story. The setting is on the second tallest mountain in the world called K2. There is a town on the mountain called Korphe. Greg Mortenson came across this towned after he tried to attempt to climb the mountain but failed because he lost his group. The town he found didn't have much of anything and he was amazed when they took him in when he was weak from the mountain. He wants to help the town as much as he can because they helped him even though they don't have anything. If this book took place in Africa, the plot would be totally different because you wouldn't have altitude problems in Africa. Also the town doesn't have many resouces like Africa does (kind of, don't forget Korphe is on the side of a mountain) so it would be really different.

  19. I like how the author, Patricia Cornwell, has provided enough detail for every scene in the book, Postmortem. She doesn’t give to much detail that makes you bored and takes forever to get your point across and she doesn’t leave out any detail that leaves you clueless to up coming events. I also like how she provided examples to what the characters are talking about. Like when the characters would talk about what they read or saw in the newspaper there would be the column that they have read after they have made their statement. As I read I noticed that the main character, Dr Scarpetta, acts kind of frightened and disturbed. I think she just needs a break from her job as a medical examiner because if I had a job always being around the negative results of what some humans are capable of creating I would begin to act the same way around others as well. I wonder if it was the last victim’s husband that is the murderer because his fingerprints were found at the crime scene from an unknown substance that was found on all four bodies. I think that would be awesome if it was him that brutally raped and strangled the four victims because I don’t like him. He was mean to the people investigating his wife’s murder. I understand him being upset for coming home and seeing his wife dead on a bed but wouldn’t you let the police do whatever they have to do in order to catch the man behind it, especially when there were three other crimes just like that one just days before? I’m not sure about the husband but I sure would not want some rapist serial killer running around the town I live in. I’d let the police do whatever it takes to get him off the street as soon as possible.

  20. I am reading the Heist Society. It’s a mystery thriller, but from the thief’s side of the story. I think it is interesting how Katarina’s family has been in the business of stealing expensive things. It seems that Katarina, for short Kat, just wants to be a normal teenager, but she can’t because of her family’s actions. I wonder how she feels, when she gets dragged into helping her father. Her father had told her he didn’t steal this art collection and that he has a good alibi, but apparently the owner of this collection still thinks it was him, when Katarina had an unexpected meeting with this Arturo Taccone. Her uncle had said he was “a different kind of bad,” I wonder what that means; I think it means that he is a clever man and a sneaky person. I can’t believe Katarina is going to steal these paintings from the original thief, to get back to Arturo to save her father’s life in 2 weeks! She must have a lot of confidence in herself and her friend Hale, who is going to help her. It didn’t have a slow beginning either, you get right into the action. This story will be interesting.

  21. I think it’s funny when Hale and Kat go to Italy, where Arturo has his place, and her cousin Gabrielle meets them and Kat doesn’t seem to think her cousin is capable of doing anything, but she is. When the three of them go to just look at the Taccone estate, I was surprised that Kat just started to walk up to the drawbridge, when she knew cameras and guards were watching her. I think Arturo Taccone thinks Kat is smart, but he still believes her father stole the paintings. I wonder what Hale and Gabrielle were thinking when Kat just decided to walk up to the estate and enter into it, without telling them what she was doing. So far I think it is so interesting to read about these teenagers, who are trying to find the real thief and steal the paintings from him.

  22. Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell reminds me of a Law and Order SVU case. The main character, Dr Kay Scarpetta, who is the Chief Medical Examiner of Richmond, Virginia, narrates her story of a case she is working on. As the chief she gets to work on the highest-level cases in the medical office so she is assigned to a case that has developed a pattern. It reminds me of a Law and Order case because the case Dr Scarpetta is working on consists of four murdered victims that are part of a pattern to each other’s sexually motivated crime. I really like the plot of the story so far because I think I would like to become a forensic scientist and help find the truth of a case. I also like the plot because it is realistic. Although it is a sad and disturbing truth, I like to be aware of knowing that it is possible the case the main character is working on could also happen in real life and not just in a book or movie. I think Dr Scarpetta has become a victim of the case as well even though she has been assaulted by or even met the murderer because it is impacting her life outside her profession. She is afraid to go to sleep at night in fear of being called to another victim at a crime scene and the case has also affected her relationship with her ten-year-old niece, Lucy, who is staying with her for a couple weeks. Because her niece is at a higher level of schooling then most ten-year-olds she could comprehend the article in the daily newspaper about the case her aunt, Dr Scarpetta, is involved in. If I was Lucy I would be afraid and worried for not only my aunt but for myself as well because if anyone would try to come after my aunt they would find me there too. I wonder how the murderer knew the only window that was unlocked in the house of the last crime scene was the one in the bathroom. I would understand if the window was open but the window was shut so I think the victim knew her killer.

  23. As I get further into the book, I am finding that I dislike the writing style of the book because the author describes every minute detail. I think it gives a better description of the characters feelings and setting, but I just want to know what is going to happen next. The sentences are filled with “fluff” that doesn’t need to be there. I still like the book, though. It is not the best book I have read, but I don’t know until I finish. The good thing about the writing style is that even though I feel there is way more words than needed in each sentence, it isn’t boring me that I want to stop reading. I was surprised in the book when I found out that Mile’s son, Jonah, had fallen behind in school and the teacher let him. I can’t see how they would pass him if he has that far behind. Something that makes the book kind of relatable is that it takes place in a small town.

  24. While reading and finishing my book I grew very attached to the book. It made me think what I would to do if iwas in that same situation. The book also had away of leaving you wanting to always know what happens next. While reading I felt a lot of different emotions, in the way that the book brought up past memories. I also felt that in a way I could feel the smae feeling the character was feeling.

  25. While reading it brought up a lot that has happened in my life. Some of the things that happened in the book relate so much to my life that it actually was a very interesting read. What i also liked about the book is that it when I started the book and I knew from the first to pages I was going to love the book. It is very hard for me to sick with a book if i dont conect with the story right away. But while i read I knew this book would be a great book and touch me in many ways and show love in a different way, that i havent seen before.

  26. In my book the main character, Dominic, finds out that his days playing professional football are numbered. The reason for this is because he has developed a deseise that eats away at his bones. This doesn't nessisarly mean he can't play, but sense it is in his knee it means once the knee colapses he cannot play again. I can relate to this because my cousin played college footbal and had to stop because of an injury. It was the same in the way that he could still play but it would affect the rest of his life. Although one diffrence is that Dominic isn't going to stop playing untill he cannot possibly play one more snap.

  27. My book is called "Garden of Shadows". It is the first book of the series but should be read last. It was published last. The main character Olivia narrates it as she tries to find love, and when she does what happens to her to make her so angry, mean, and religious. I like the book so far, and now I am starting to realize why the grandmother did the things she did in "Flowers in the Attic". I think it's funny that Olivia is tall and awkward because in the other books her family members are so pretty. Olivia is really studious, and it's kind of weird. I think it's cute that she finally found someone she liked and he liked her back, but it's bad because Malcolm is really cruel.

  28. This comment is responding to Miranda's on April 17th.

On 60 Minutes, they were saying that the book is full of inaccuracies, and that his charity is taking credit for schools that were never made. The "60 Minutes" story drew upon observations from the porters who joined Mortenson on his mountain trip in Pakistan and dispute his being lost. They say he only visited Korphe a year later. The author says "60 Minutes" didn't give him anytime to answer them, and his publisher, Viking, said they will go though the book with him.

  29. Jonas is now the Receiver of Memory. I think that The Giver should give Jonas more bad memories instead of just good ones. If I were Jonas I would want to tell everyone about my special ability to see color and sense emotions. No one in the community has memories. Jonas thinks school is pointless, because the instructors have no memories. All the instructors have is information. I think Jonas should not go to school and disobey the community to see what they would do. Jonas does not know of anything out side of the community. I don’t get how the memories don’t show him this. I think Jonas has feelings for Fiona, but he doesn’t know what this emotion feels like. I think they will get together in the end.

  30. This is a response to Chris’s post on April, 15th at 2:12.

Chris said his book’s main character, Christopher Boon, is very creative in his way of thinking and has anger problems. The main character in my book The Giver is very creative too. Jonas thinks out side of the box. Jonas experiences things that are out of the ordinary from everything else. Jonas can get out of many of the communities rules….like taking pills. This makes Jonas able to think as himself. I think Jonas is very creative. If he does not know something; he guesses and makes a crazy prediction. Jonas only gets angry once that I see so far when The Giver transmits him a bad memory. I think Jonas will become angrier at the job he was given as the book goes on.

  32. i am halfway through the book now, and i am realizing that the answer to her needs comes in the form of a room at 373 Lorelei Street<--hence the name of the book. Opal Keats, in order to make ends meet and pay her taxes, rents a room to Zoe. In Opal, Zoe finds an ally, someone who has seen much of the past but always looks to the future. Zoe swears she'll never return to her mother's house and the life she left. But when expenses are high and her only income comes from waitressing at a diner, she knows she might have to go to an extreme or two in order to keep her room. "I have done ebrything but prostatution, just to keep my room, so i don't have to go back to my mothers place ever again" this was one of the quotes from Zoe at the end of chapter 10. I can sort of relate to Zoe, becuase i have a relative so started living on her own, she is my cousin, and her paretns just kicked her out, and she doesnt really have any finacial support, so she works at a small dinner. She works nights and weekends, and during the days she is either going to class or studying for class. I feel bad, but its what she has to do, and she doesnt complain, and neither does Zoe and it shows that Zoe is a strong girl, and she is able to live on her own.

  33. I think that at the end of the book everything will work out with her mother and her, and i think she will end up going back home. I know that my mom, even though she is crazy sometimes, wouldn’t want me away from her and stuff for that amount of time Zoe is. I get on my mother’s nerves, but i think any mother, no matter if you’re a drug addict or a alcoholic, they still love their daughters just as much, and I’m sure they would miss them, just like I predict Zoe's mother will start doing sometimes soon. i think that with a little strength, Zoe will tackle her problems one by one and get the resolved. This book is a good book, because as the reader you can almost feel the love or the sadness coming from Zoe and the people around her. I know as someone who hates reading, this is a good book for teen girls. It talks about struggles and overcoming your fears and it shows how some girls need to grow up at a young age. This book has taught me to be thankful for my mom, because she could be an alcoholic or a drug user, and i could be in a situation just like Zoe, any one of us could. I will be writing to you much more throughout the book. Stay tuned: D

  34. As i am reading, i realize that Zoe is a very bright, energetic girl, she has just been trapped with her mother, and her mother as been bringing her down. Even though Zoe doesnt like her mom, she is always worried about her, like i chapter 13, she is walking to her new home, and she keeps thinking "what if mama needs me" i think i would think that too if my mother was a heavy drinker, i would be scared for her. She gets to her house and she hears a big knock, and she thinks it's her mom, but its not, it's a harder knock then her mothers. She smiled and she opend the door and it was her grandma. Her grandma was really upset with her and asked her what her probelm was and stuff. I think that hergrandma should be more understanding of her becuase she knows her mother is a drunk, and i think she knows how her mom can be. I feel bad for Zoe becuase her grandma is so mad. She now has to worry about her mom being alone and not safe, and her grandma being really upset with her. I think that she is happy here at this home, and i don't think anyone should be bothering her with her mothers problems, unless Zoe wants to be involved with them herself.

  35. My independent novel is Waiting for You by Susane Colasanti. So far it is really really good and I like it a lot. The main character, Marisa, is a freshman in high school and is stuck between two boys - Derek, the total hot surfer boy, and Nash, her nerdy, old best friend. But there's a problem. Derek has a girlfriend. Her best friend Sterling has been MIA lately because of all the older boys she's meeting online. Marisa is stuck in a situation with no help from her best friend.

  36. I think the author did a good job making this completely realistic. It's very believable. I like Marisa, she's a good choice for the main character. She's really smart and funny, yet kinda awkward at the same time. If I were her at this poin in the novel, I'd choose to be with Derek. He's recently single and seems interested in her. He has been flirting with her during art and always sitting next to her. Derek seems to have a good heart and seems to be a really good boyfriend.

  37. The book I'm reading is "So Yesterday" by Scott Westerfeld. Desiree told me it was a good book and picked it out for me. I was a little worried about it, but so far it's actually really good. It's about what's cool in our society and whats not. The main character, Hunter, is a "cool hunter." A cool hunter is when someone goes out and looks for new fashion trends or something that is new and no one has seen before. I think its kind of ironic how his name is Hunter and he is a cool hunter.

  38. I really like what the book is about, I've never read a book like this. It's actually really interesting. The main character is exciting to read about because he's different and I personally have never met someone like that. He goes out in the streets and if he sees something trendy he asks people if he can take a picture. I think it's a little creepy, but whatever works I guess. When Hunter meets this girl with cool shoelaces thats when things get kind of confusing. A lot of weird things happen with Hunter and his boss. I'm about half way through the book and I can't wait to finish it.

  39. My independent novel is "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins. Catching Fire is the second book of the Hunger Games series. I am already almost done with the book and I really like it. I also really liked the first book, so that's why I've decided to read the rest of the series. Since Katniss survived the hunger games in the first book, she now has a lot of money and a new house for her family. What I like about Katniss though is that even though she has all of this money and a new house, she still does what she used to do before the games. She still hunts and talks to everyone she used to. I like that Katniss didn't let the games follow her back home.

  41. My book that I am reading is population 485 by Michael Perry. It is a book about the author and his adventures of moving back to a small Wisconsin farm town. In order to get more involved in the community, he signs up for the fire department. I really like the start of the book because the way he writes it makes it feel as if you are in the stories. I can connect to the book because he has many adventures that are things that only happen in small towns. I also like that he wrote the book in a story telling way.

  42. I am a third of the way through the book now, and I am continuing to like it. I like the book because he is continuing to tell many of the stories he can remember from the fire department and his childhood. My favorite charecter is Micheal, because of the way he approaches dangerous and scary situation, with humor and tries to have fun while doing his firefighting job. I can also relate to Micheal's neighbor, because he reminds me of my dad. I predict that something bad is going to happen to Micheal soon. I think this could be an accident fighting fires. His stories also remind me of stories from my life.

  43. I think my character Zoe, is a very strong girl. She knows how to hold her own, and he knows what to do in sticky situations. I feel bad, because she has to decide if she should really stay in her house on Lorelei Street. She loves that place and she thinks that it is the best for her, but is it the best for her mother? or her mothers health? I am really getting into the book now, because in the chapter i am reading at the moment, she is thinking of reasons why she should leave and why she should stay. Zoe has a lot of thinking to do, and i think that it's a lot of pressure to put on a young adult.

  44. I think that girls who are troubled should read this book, or girls who are going through hard times, becuase it shoes, that anyone can get through a tough situation. I think that it will show other girls, that maybe they don't have it so bad. In a way, i think that it would also help mothers also who are fighting to stop drinking, or trying to be closer with there daughter. This book sort of opened my eyes to what might be going on in other places, not just in small little plymouth. I dont think that it's a huge problem, but i think that there is something that can be done, maybe therapy for daughters and mothers. I really like this book actually, and i didnt think i would. I feel like lost of girls should check out or consider reading this.
